The first version of the Xbox 360 was released in 2005. By the end of its first year, the Xbox 360 had broken a world record, having arrived in 36 countries. At a retail price of $399 for a Core unit or $299 for an Arcade unit, the Xbox 360 also had a price advantage over the more expensive PlayStation 3 back then. The Xbox 360 was an immediate hit not only bringing upgrades from the fans of the original, but also tapping into the wider gaming market and making huge inroads into the European market. Even though it was big success Microsoft did rush out the console to get a head of Sony and this is what led to the infamous 'red ring of death'. It became such a problem that Microsoft was offering to replace the broken console which ended up costing them $1 billion. The launch of Kinect for the console, a motion and voice-sensor which Microsoft is states as the fastest ever selling consumer device, brought a major overhaul in design and the promise that this console was not being replaced any time soon. One of the big selling points of the 360 was Xbox live online multiplayer. Now that the technology had advanced then online games would run a lot more smoothly and be a lot more seamless.

It was in this console generation that we saw huge developments in the games that were released. Motion capture was started to become more advanced and accurate. Allowing for the most realistic full body and facial animations and allowed for games like L.A Noire and many other with the most lifelike animations.

Some of the best games for the Xbox 360 include Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Grand Theft Auto 4, Red Dead Redemption, Batman Arkham Asylum, Portal 2, Fallout 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Mass Effect 2, The Witcher 2, Bioshock, Fez, Half Life 2, Halo 4, Gears of War 3 and many more.

These are first three version of the original Xbox 360 console.

This video highlights 20 games that define the Xbox 360.

This is the Xbox 360 Slim that was released in 2010. It came with Kinect and was slightly faster than the original console.
