The GameCube was released in Japan and America in 2001 and Europe in 2002. The GameCube was Nintendo's first console to use miniDVDs instead of cartridges. The GameCube couldn't play CD's or DVD's. The console was praised for its controller, extensive software library and high-quality games, but was criticized for its clunky design and lack of features. Out of all the Nintendo console the GameCube is the least popular. The GameCube sold 22 million consoles worldwide over its lifespan. One of the reasons the GameCube was not as successful as the other consoles was that the PlayStation 2 and Xbox were already released and were a lot more popular and had a bigger and more impressive game library.
