The PlayStation 3 was released in Japan and North America in November, 2006 and in Europe and Australia in March,2007 .Sony decided to market two versions of the PS3. One had a 60GB hard drive, WiFi wireless internet, and the ability to read various flash ram cards. The lower cost version features a 20GB drive, and didn't have any of the features of the 60GB model. The orignal price for the 60GB model was $599 and the 20GB model was $499. Sony ended up losing roughly $200 on every early sale on the console and by the end of 2007 fiscal year Sony reportedly lost $2 billion. Sony then released a 40GB model that was a $100 cheaper than the 20GB which was some features removed like PS2 emotion engine CPU which allowed backwards compatibility with PS2 games. One of the big selling points for the PS3 was the built in Blu Ray player. The PS3 was only marketed as a console but a multimedia device which worked because by the end of 2012 over 63.9 millions consoles had been sold world wide. Another big selling point for the PS3 was the PlayStation Network which allowed players to play online together, while Xbox live you had to pay for the PlayStation Network on the PS3 was completely free. The PlayStation 3 consoles were so powerful that in 2010 the United States Air Force created a super computer using 1,700 PS3 consoles. When all of the systems were connected together they were capable of over 5 hundred trillion calculations per second making them 50,000 times faster than the average laptop at the time. When the consoles were re purposed into a super computer it was very good press for Sony, it helped boost the sales of the consoles.
